BlackBerry's stock surges after profit, revenue beat expectations

Shares of BlackBerry Ltd. BB, rallied 4.6% in premarket trade Thursday, after the security software company reported fiscal third-quarter earnings and revenue that beat expectations. For the quarter to Nov. 30, the company reported net income of $59 million, or a loss of 1 cent per share on a diluted basis, after net income of $43 million, or a diluted per-share loss of 4 cents, in the same period a year ago. Excluding non-recurring items, EPS came to 5 cents, beating the FactSet consensus of a 2-cent profit. Revenue rose to $226 million from $210 million, above the FactSet consensus of $213.3 million.

Licensing and intellectual property revenue in the fourth quarter rises 71% year over year.

The company's licensing and intellectual property revenue, which includes revenue from licensing existing patents to other companies, jumped 71% to $99 million. Overall revenue rose to $255 million, and earnings were 11 cents per share.

Analysts were expecting revenue of $241.1 million and earnings of 6 cents per share.

BlackBerry (BB) Q2 Loss Wider Than Expected, Revenue View Cut

BlackBerry Limited BB reported lackluster second-quarter fiscal 2020 (ended Aug 31, 2019) financial results.

Net Loss

On GAAP basis, net loss for the quarter was $44 million or loss of 10 cents per share against net income of $43 million in the year-ago quarter. The year-over-year decline was primarily due to higher operating expenses.

The company achieved break-even non-GAAP earnings per share. Adjusted loss per share was 2 cents, which was wider than the Zacks Consensus Estimate of loss of 1 cent.


Revenues

Quarterly GAAP revenues increased 16.2% year over year to $244 million. Software and services revenues were $239 million, up 24%. Geographically, North America generated revenues of $179 million compared with $133 million in the year-ago quarter. Revenues from Europe, Middle East and Africa were $47 million, down 11.3% year over year, while revenues from other regions totaled $18 million, down 25%. Non-GAAP revenues were $261 million compared with $214 million in the year-earlier quarter.

BlackBerry shares have spiked more than 50% on Tuesday amid surging investor optimism about the company’s automobile sensor software platform, known as Ivy.

Having long ago moved on from its once-iconic mobile phones, BlackBerry (ticker: BB) Tuesday morning announced a deal with Amazon.com’s (AMZN) Amazon Web Services to jointly develop and market Ivy, which BlackBerry describes as “a scalable, cloud-connected software platform that will allow automakers to provide a consistent and secure way to read vehicle sensor data, normalize it, and create actionable insights from that data both locally in the vehicle and in the cloud.” The company said auto makers can use Ivy “to create responsive in-vehicle services that enhance driver and passenger experiences.”...........
