A Company Few Americans Know Is About to Dethrone Intel

(Bloomberg) -- For more than 30 years, Intel Corp. has dominated chipmaking, producing the most important component in the bulk of the world’s computers. That run is now under threat from a company many Americans have never heard of.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. was created in 1987 to churn out chips for companies that lacked the money to build their own facilities. The approach was famously dismissed at the time by Advanced Micro Devices Inc. founder Jerry Sanders. "Real men have fabs," he quipped at a conference, using industry lingo for factories.

These days, ridicule has given way to envy as TSMC plants have risen to challenge Intel at the pinnacle of the $400 billion industry. AMD recently chose TSMC to make its most advanced processors, having spun off its own struggling factories years before.

...

“It’s a once-in-a-50-year situation,” said Renee James, the former No. 2 at Intel who heads startup Ampere. Her company is less than two years old and yet it’s going after Intel’s dominant server chip business. That Ampere thinks it can compete is a testament to stumbles by Intel, and TSMC’s ability to benefit from those mistakes.

TSMC expects 5G earnings boost, flags South Korea-Japan spat as risk

TAIPEI (Reuters) - Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd (TSMC) on Thursday said it expects a stronger half-year on 5G telecoms demand, and that a dispute over chip-making materials between Japan and South Korea is its most uncertain factor.

The world's largest contract chipmaker reported a decline in second-quarter profit, but said demand is likely to recover during the rest of 2019 particularly from smartphone makers, hampered at present by the impact of a Sino-U.S. trade war.

...

Earlier, TSMC, a proxy for technology demand as its clients include iPhone maker Apple and chip leader Qualcomm Inc, reported a 7.6% decline in April-June net profit at T$66.77 billion ($2.15 billion), meeting analyst estimates.

Revenue rose 3.3% to T$241 billion, but fell 1.4% to $7.75 billion in U.S. dollar terms - still topping both the firm's forecast and the average of 23 analyst estimates compiled by Refinitiv.

TSM Stock Nudges Lower After Good Third Quarter

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company TSM reported a strong quarter that was likely driven by its key customers Apple AAPL, which is reportedly seeing stronger demand for iPhones after taking down prices; Advanced Micro Devices AMD, which is leaning on it for its 7nm high performance computing (HPC) and other chips; and NVIDIA NVDA, which is using it for its graphics chips.

The strong demand is leading TSM to build out capacity, which accounts for the 14.3% year-over-year increase in net PP&E. At the same time, its maturities are coming forward (55.9% reduction in long-term debt and 53.8% increase in current liabilities), so the 3.2% reduction in cash on hand may not be a particularly wonderful thing.

Here are some of the numbers-

Revenue of $9.40 billion was up 21.3% sequentially and 10.7% year on year (better than the guided $9.1-$9.2 billion).

More than half of it came from the advanced technology nodes of 7nm, 10nm and 16nm, which accounted for a respective 27%, 2% and 22% of revenue in the last quarter.

TSMC Posts Record Q2 Profits, Sees Robust Chip Demand In 2020 Amid 5G Boost

...

TSMC said profits for the three months ending in June came in at T$120.8 billion ($4.1 billion), up 81.1% from the same period last year to a record high and firmly ahead of the Refinitiv-collected forecast of $T111.00 billion.

Group revenues, which TSMC reports in U.S. dollars, rose 34.1% to $10.4 billion, a figure it expects to hit between $11.2 billion and $11.5 billion over the third quarter - a 22% surge from the same period in 2019. Its 2020 revenue forecast was also improved, with the group now seeing a 20% gain on last year, compared to a "mid- to high-teens" percentage gain forecast earlier in the spring.

RE: Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing
