Stock market ends wild week in negative territory, as Dow, S&P 500 set for worst December since 1931
The Dow on Friday retreated in a holiday-shortened week, colored by erratic and powerful price swings. The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.33% closed down by about 77 points, or 0.3%, at 23,062, the S&P 500 index SPX, -0.12% declined 0.1% to end at 2,486, while the Nasdaq Composite Index COMP, +0.08% finished the session virtually unchanged at 6,585, on a preliminary basis. However, for the week, the Dow rose 2.8%, the S&P 500 climbed 2.9%, while the Nasdaq registered a weekly gain of 4%, with all three indexes marking their first weekly gains after three straight weekly declines.
