Discovery Declines Despite Earnings Beat, YouTube Deal

Discovery beats Wall Street's first-quarter earnings estimates but the stock falls.

Discovery (DISCA - Get Report)  reported adjusted first-quarter earnings per share of 87 cents, beating analysts' estimates of 80 cents.

Adjusted operating income (before depreciation and amortization -- a non-GAAP measure of financial performance) also beat, coming in at $1.16 billion vs. the estimate of $1.08 billion. Revenue of $2.71 billion was in line with expectations.

Discovery (DISCA) Q2 Earnings Miss Estimates, Revenues Up Y/Y

Discovery DISCA reported second-quarter 2019 adjusted earnings of 98 cents per share that missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate by a penny.

Adjusting for tax benefit worth $455 million or 64 cents per share and after-tax restructuring and other charges of $8 million or 1 cent per share, earnings were $1.61 per share, up almost 144% year over year.

Revenues increased 1.4% year over year to $2.89 billion and beat the consensus mark of $2.88 billion. The year-over-year growth was driven by an increase in advertising (56.1% of revenues) and distribution (41.8% of revenues) revenues.
